A home shaped by material, light, and the everyday rhythms of family life.

In Battersea, a typical South London terrace has been reimagined for a family with a deep love of materials. The feel of wood beneath the hand, the cool smoothness of stone, the grounded weight of concrete, and the warmth of light moving across surfaces shaped with care. What was once a dark and compartmentalised house is now a sequence of spaces that open, flow, and breathe.

At the heart of the project is the side and rear extension, where the house folds outward towards the garden. Generous glazing draws daylight deep into the plan, while polished concrete floors run seamlessly from the kitchen to the terrace, softening the boundary between inside and out. The architecture celebrates honesty in materials: Douglas fir beams, Carrara marble, London stock brick, and Corten steel — each chosen for its texture, its tactility, and the way it will weather gently over time.

Angular forms lead you through the home, revealing framed views as you move. This is felt most clearly at the stair between the hallway and kitchen, where a pair of in-situ cast concrete columns have been subtly carved to widen sightlines and enhance connection. In the dining space below, cranked Douglas fir beams rise into a vaulted ceiling, giving the room a lofted, uplifting feel.

Above, the library opens onto the extension with a framed aperture and built-in bench — a quiet perch for reading, pausing, or looking down into the life unfolding below. An internal lightwell brings daylight into the deeper parts of the home, linking the basement media room with the kitchen and creating a moment of drama as sunlight drops through the house from above.

The rear façade is wrapped in Corten steel, its rich, weathered surface offering a subtle industrial counterpoint to the warm timber within. Inside, bespoke oak joinery, a sculptural Carrara marble island, and exposed structural timber give each space its own character while keeping the home visually connected.

Into the Fold is a home shaped as much by craft as by space: a response to a family’s love of materiality, where industrial character meets natural warmth, and where every surface tells a story of texture, light, and life.
