Down Under, West Sussex

Our client approached us with a challenge for a plot of land beneath the South Downs: Create a modern home that feels completely natural to this setting. This was initially a feasibility study, a chance to imagine, but the location itself was used to guide the design choices.

We began by thoroughly studying the site. The contours, the light, and the local materials became the foundation of our conversation. We focused on sourcing timber, stone, and tile locally to ensure the new building shares the authentic character of traditional Sussex structures.

Through models and detailed plans, we explored the best way for the barn to sit on the slope, manage the weather, and frame the stunning views.

The resulting design is a barn that is contemporary, yet looks like it has always belonged here. It features honest materials and a clear structure, creating a vision for a home that is truly born of its landscape.
