Dark Matters, Muswell Hill

Dark Matters is a full retrofit of an Edwardian house set on a sloping site overlooking The Lake at Alexandra Park in North London.

Our client came to us with a familiar brief: to rethink, enlarge, and repair the original Edwardian structure to create a contemporary family home. The design strategy balanced a robust exposed concrete frame with a traditional skin of masonry and Crittall glazing, fusing modern precision with historic character.

Having recently lived in New York, our client challenged us to pursue an uncommon approach: a home that embraced patina, irregularity and character. In his words, it should feel “as f**ked up as possible!”

That ambition sparked an obsessive exploration of materials: reclaimed stone, aged timber, and natural fabrics, all sourced and placed with extraordinary care. Weekend calls and late-night discussions became part of the process, a collaboration shaped by a shared love of craft and imperfection.

The result is a home with a rare authenticity: dark yet warm, characterful yet refined. It feels real, lived-in, and deeply personal – a sanctuary wrapped in a shadowy envelope, rich with texture, history, and meaning.
