Our Studio
Matthew Giles Architects is an architecture and interior design studio specialising in the delivery of private homes in the UK and internationally. With over 100 completed projects, we bring experience, clarity and care to every stage of the process.
We lead each project from first conversation to completion, providing continuity, accountability and clear direction throughout. Working across architecture, interiors and landscape, we create coherent homes shaped around the lives of the people who inhabit them.
Our role is to understand what matters most to each client, so that every decision is made with intent and confidence. We manage complexity carefully and transparently, allowing the process to feel calm, structured and enjoyable.
Our ambition is to create thoughtful, human and quietly confident architecture of lasting quality. For all enquiries, please contact our studio manager, Kate Yaldren.
The Team
Matthew Giles
Founder / Director
Matthew leads the studio’s work, bringing 25 years of experience working exclusively on private residential projects. Over that time, he has worked on more than 300 commissions.
His work is recognised for its clarity, warmth, and sensitivity to both people and place. His approach is grounded in the understanding that architecture depends as much on judgment as design. This has established the practice as a trusted partner for unique residential projects.
A chartered member of RIBA, he is known for asking the right questions, listening carefully to how clients live and what they value.
Matthew remains directly responsible for setting direction and standing behind the outcomes each project delivers. His leadership continues to guide the practice’s ethos, with a focus on work of enduring quality.
Lu Bai
Associate Director
Lu completed her architecture training in the US and is a licensed architect of the American Institute of Architects.
Lu has worked in practices across the US, China, and the UK, with experience ranging in sectors from large scale commercial, infrastructure, hospitality, and cultural projects to small scale residential and furniture design. Lu has worked at Foster and Partners and Giles & Pike Architects since moving to London in 2014.
With an editing eye, she enjoys keeping up with the latest design trends and emerging material palettes, carefully filtering what is truly timeless and translating it into her projects. She can often be found rummaging through vintage furniture shops and fabric markets, where mixing the old and new, bold colours, textiles and textures becomes a source of inspiration that she regularly weaves into her work to add depth and distinctive flair. She believes it is these personal touches that make a room feel human and truly memorable.
Lu has led the delivery of a number of key projects, including The Space Between in Highgate, House of Panes and Maison Mediterranean in Muswell Hill, and Invisible City in Clapham.
Tom Munday
Associate Director
Tom completed his architectural training at Cardiff University, graduating with a First Class Honours MArch in 2017. He went on to complete his RIBA Part III professional studies at the University of Westminster, qualifying as an architect in 2019.
He has experience across both the public and private sectors, having previously worked at award-winning London practices Sarah Wigglesworth Architects and Giles & Pike Architects.
Tom’s final-year thesis explored the role of craft in architecture, informing an ongoing interest in tectonics, materiality, and making. He is particularly interested in innovative approaches to the use of materials.
He has led the delivery of a number of key projects, including A Second Skin in Wimbledon, Black River in Thames Ditton, Into the Fold in Battersea, and Law and Order at Clapham Common.
Viviana Garcia
Associate Director
After graduating with a First Class Master’s degree in Architecture from Cardiff University, Viviana completed her Part III professional diploma at the University of Westminster, qualifying in 2018.
As an associate at Foster + Partners, Viviana lead a multidisciplinary team to design and deliver large scale projects both internationally and in the UK. She was selected to represent the practice as Architect and CDM Principal Designer, relocating to oversee the construction of a high profile, private residential project.
Previously, Viviana worked in a Swiss practice in Zurich, where she developed a strong interest in architectural composition and detailing. During this time, she was awarded with a Travelling Scholarship enabling a first-hand insight on her thesis on changes in cultural identity in far eastern cities.
Viviana is passionate about dancing and travelling. In her free time she is always keen to explore nature and inner city neighbourhoods - especially in the search for local markets and foodie hotspots.
Ed O'Neill
Senior Architect
Ed joined Matthew Giles Architects after working at several design-led practices, including Oliver Leech Architects, Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and Loyn + Co Architects. He achieved First Class Honours in both RIBA Part I and II at the Welsh School of Architecture in Cardiff, before completing his architectural training at UWE in 2022.
Prior to pursuing a career in architecture, Ed earned a Bachelor’s degree in Architectural Engineering, during which he spent a year working for concrete sub-contractor Byrne Bros. This included gaining valuable on-site experience as an assistant site engineer on the Stirling Prize-winning Bloomberg Headquarters in London.
Whenever he can, Ed will escape to Devon to hone his carpentry skills and take long, lonely walks across Dartmoor.
